Although you could make this work without this book, it does a great job of working you along so you can reflexively recognize the notes. It has helped me learn new pieces as note reading does not come naturally. For $5, this was a great value for me.

My daughter and I have been learning piano together, with the guidance of a piano teacher. I bought this book to help my daughter (kindergarten) improve her reading skills as she learns largely by ear. Though she is working through Bastien level 2, this book was a quite bit challenging for her and should have started with easier pieces in basic 5 finger positions (middle C, C and F). We are instead using sonatinas in color for sight reading until she is ready to handle this book.
