I think the Bastien books are awesome. I've tried a few different beginner methods, many of which I find aren't balanced very well. Many beginner books either move too slow, or too fast, but I found the Bastien books found the perfect balance. They're also quite fun, the song names are cute, which is a plus when working with younger students.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is Bastien Major Scales & Pieces Level 4 (GP11) for?
Early intermediate piano students (roughly Bastien Level 4 / ages 10+) who already read music and need all 12 major scales with clear fingerings, short drills, and pieces that use each scale right away.
Does GP11 teach all 12 major scales?
Yes. It covers C, G, D, A, E, B, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, and Gb with proper fingerings, plus reinforcement exercises and a piece that applies each scale.
How should teachers use GP11 in lessons?
One scale at a time: week 1–2 learn the scale hands separately, week 3 add the reinforcement exercise, week 4 play the matching piece. That sequence shows students why the scale matters in real music.
Is GP11 a beginner method book like Bastien Piano Basics Level 1?
No. Level 1 is a main lesson book for younger beginners. GP11 is a technic companion for early intermediate students who are ready for full major-scale work. Use Basics Level 1 earlier in the journey; use GP11 when majors and applied pieces are the goal.
